Why the WanderWay is the best bike rack for a VW California or T6
The Thule WanderWay is the only bike rack Thule designs specifically for the T6 and T6.1 tailgate. It arrives pre-assembled, hooks onto the tailgate without drilling, and its raised platform keeps the number plate and rear lights fully visible – so there’s no lighting board to wire up. With no bikes loaded you can still open the tailgate, which is what makes it practical to leave on a California all season.
- 2 to 4 bikes: two bikes as standard; add the Additional Rail for WanderWay for a third and fourth. Fat-tyre bikes fit with the Thule Fat Bike Rail.
- E-bike ready: 30kg per bike on positions 1 and 2, 60kg total, so two e-bikes are no problem.
- Quick loading: rails slide left and right to suit any frame layout; detachable bike arms with lockable AcuTight knobs that click at the right torque; wheel holders with pump buckles.
- Folds flat: platform folds up against the van when empty and flat for storage.
- Locks included: bikes lock to the rack and the rack locks to the van.
- Colour: Black (Thule 911002). The silver/anodised version has been discontinued by Thule.

Fitting
The WanderWay is designed to be fitted by one person with no tools and no drilling: the upper hooks locate over the top edge of the tailgate and the lower straps tension against the bottom edge. Most customers have it on in 30–45 minutes first time. If you’d rather we did it, book a fitting at our Poole workshop – we’re an authorised Thule installer and fit these most weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Does it fit the T6.1? Yes. The T6.1 tailgate is the same shape as the T6, so the WanderWay fits 2015–2024 vans.
Does it fit a VW California? Yes – the California uses the standard T6/T6.1 tailgate. It does not fit the T7 California (2024 on).
Can I open the tailgate with the rack on? Yes, as long as no bikes are loaded. The extra weight is close to the limit of the standard gas struts, so uprated struts make it easier.
Can I use it with a Thule awning or roof rack? Yes – it’s independent of the roof, so it works alongside an Omnistor awning, roof bars or a Thule Elite Van XT on the rear doors of a second vehicle.
What about a spoiler? If your van has the factory tailgate spoiler the WanderWay will not fit. The Thule VeloSpace 3 is the usual alternative.
