I’m a VW California (T6.1) owner, which comes with a factory fitted Thule Omnistor 5102 awning. I’ve owned the van about 3 years now and, since purchase, been thinking about options to add functionality to the awning. Thule announced the Subsola range a year or so ago and I’d been keeping an eye open for reviews and deals. Spotted that Rose had them at a good price so thought I’d treat myself (and the van).

As you’d expect for Thule, it feels and looks well made, the material is more of a beige / grey colour than the silver / grey of the awning, but doesn’t look jarringly different. It comes with a 3 part rafter that can go at either end of the awning to slide the panels onto, there’s also a selection of different fittings, depending on what type of awning you have.

For the 5102 you get an extra metal block with a bolt in, the same as the ones the awning arms are attached to. You mount the extra block at the front / cab end of the awning, it just clamps to the casing, spanner required but no drilling. The rafter pole fits over the bolt at the van side and into a little black semicircular holder that sits in the lip in the outside of the awning (the bit that winds out and has the legs attached if that makes sense). You need to drill a couple of small holes to screw the black holders on, but it’s pretty straight forward as long as you have a 3.5mm metal drill bit.

You get two of the black holders and one of the extra metal blocks for the front (you use the existing arm attachment at the back end of the van) so you can use the rafter at either end but leave everything attached when it’s wound back in. Just have the rafter and triangles at which every end you want. You need to wind the awning fully out, pop the rafter in and then wind it back in slightly to make sure it’s held tight. I have to say I’m a little disappointed with the way the rafter just sits over the bolt at the van side, it doesn’t feel particularly well designed as you’d expect Thule stuff to and rattles around a but until you wind the awning back in and it becomes more rigid.

I’ve not used the awning in anger yet, just had a go at setting it up outside the house to see how easy it was. I’m glad I did as it looks like, whatever your awning and choice of brackets, you need to spend some time getting the mounting bits fitted first. Probably not something to do on a campsite. I gave the panels a quick go and they all worked as expected, zipping and hooking together well.

I’m at a festival next Bank Holiday weekend where I will be looking to make use of it properly. I’ve knocked a star off simply because, for my 5102 awning, the fittings don’t seem as good as they could be. That said, all considered I’m pleased with what you get for the money, considering getting the matching front set as well.
